Finchey is off to the Masters

I am off to the Masters.  It is that time of year again when all of golf’s finest convene at Augusta National to compete for the coveted Green Jacket.  This year will mark my good friend Gary Player’s 52 and final Masters.  Hard to believe he is still competing at 73 years of age - but he is as fit as they come.  Gary takes top care of his body through vigorous exercise and a healthy diet.  Gary’s been great for the game of golf, and has really opened the door for the rest of us international players.  He is not only a great player, but a great ambassador for the sport and such a huge part of the Masters tradition.

But before we talk more about the Masters, let’s recap a bit since my last blog.

I have spent the last couple of weeks participating in a number of charity tournaments for friends, including Ernie’s, “Els for Autism,” and Jack’s “The Jake.”  We raised a lot of necessary funds ($750k respectively) for notable organizations and had a great time out on the course.  It’s nice when you can play for fun and enjoy a good cigar with friends at the same time.  So many of the top players raise significant amounts of money for their charities on days like this, and later this year I will take part in the Gary Player Invitational series which takes place in the US, Europe,  China and South Africa.

While I’ve been golfing fore charity (pun intended) - the guys have been practicing for this year’s Masters.  Geoff Ogilvy has been playing great golf, and has the attitude to overcome the pressure of possibly becoming the first Australian to win the Green Jacket.  It’s hard to believe no Australian has won the tournament to date.  Australia’s most recognized golfer, Greg Norman, is returning to the Masters, but has said the course is too long for him to win.  I’m not too sure about that, I still expect him to play well though. He’s had a number of chances to win at the Masters, and after a fine performance last year at The Open, he is poised to make a good showing this year.  Long hitters have the best chance at Augusta, although, Zach Johnson and Trevor Immelmen, not known as long hitters, have won the last two.  We shall see how it plays out.

Many of us are glad to see Tiger back on the prowl.  He is in great form and one of the favourites for this year’s Masters.  He seems very confident and has been hitting the ball well.  Keep your ears and eyes tuned to CBS, where I will be broadcasting live from the Masters.

Until next time, cheers mates!
